"You are becoming gods. There's a new master of creation, and it's you! You've unraveled DNA, and at the same time you're cultivating bacteria strong enough to kill every living thing. You think you're ready for that much power? You're running around science like kids with guns, creating a new world, while the world you've got is stinking. Hands up, anyone who thinks you've got it right. Yeah, there's always one. I can see you. If you want the position of God, then take the responsibility!"- You Lot: Orbital, The Blue Album (2004) (sample of Christopher Eccleston from Russell T.Davies "The Second Coming") “The era of procrastination, of half-measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays, is coming to a close. In its place, we are entering a period of consequences." Winston ChurchillThe above quote is one of the centrepieces of Al Gore's powerful and urgent film 'An Inconvenient Truth', which you should definitely see if you haven't already. The film (and more substantially, the mass of science behind the arguments) shows that everyone needs to do what they can by acting now. Hopefully the damage can be stopped, but the urgency is inescapable - if you think the environment (and the planet) is important, 'Detaching yourself' from the problem isn't an option... unless that means significantly reducing your energy use and CO2 emissions. Energy Saving Trust Reduce your energy use and CO2 emissions. Climate Care Offset your carbon emissions here- though this isnt as good as reduction its better than nothing. Christian Aid Climate Change Campaign Christian Aid is so concerned about the threat to the world's poor from climate change that it has become the main focus of their campaigning against poverty. They are organising a Carbon march which culminates in London on 2nd October. |
